For Context: Evolution of CMDB
Â
CMDB is originally one of the ITSM processes defined and recommended by ITIL framework. It was designed to track and manage self-hosted assets.
Â
With shift to cloud the term started being used differently covering more concepts.
Â
As a result of COVID lockdown, the term CMDB got stretched even further, now casually applied to many types of records: real estate facilities, other non-IT assets (e.g. in health care assets), people and teams, manufacturing companies apply it to asset and supply chain management, financial services - to customer accounts and data, etc.
Â
Recent move by ServiceNow - CSDM 4.0 has been mapped to ArchiMate modeling language - see whitepaper, https://bizzdesign.com/blog/mapping-between-servicenow-csdm-and-archimate-discover-a-new-digitized-world-of-management-support/
Â
Up until today, there is a blend of terms - ITSM, IT Asset management, CMDB, and a few less frequent. Notably, Gartner is retiring all of their ITSM Magic Quadrants and Capabilities.Gartner Magic Quadrant & Critical Capabilities | Gartner So, obviously, the environment keeps evolving and terminology is getting further clarified.
